5min prep + 10min cooking



  • 1 cup (250 ml) cake flour
  • 2 tsp (10 ml) baking powder
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 4/5 cup (200 ml) milk
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) butter or margarine
  • Oil for frying
  • Pinch of salt


Step 1

Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.

Step 2

In a separate bowl, combine the egg, milk, and melted butter or margarine.

Step 3

Combine the wet and dry ingredients and mix well until lump-free.

Step 4

Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large frying pan. Spoon three spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil in the pan. You can now turn the heat down to medium so that the crumpets do not fry too quickly.

Step 5

When the batter starts to bubble, turn over, using an egg lifter. Fry for 1 minute more on the other side.

Step 6

Serve with syrup, butter or jam.
